A Very Good Question from a Butcher in Training
My name is Sean. I'm from Ireland and have been living in Boston the last three years. I have been working at a supermarket in Melrose Massachusetts for the past two and a half years as a Meat Clerk. I was recently promoted to Meat Cutter Apprentice.
I know how to cut most of the boneless meats like pork and beef from practicing when I was a clerk. A lot of Meat Cutters I know have completed there apprenticeship in six months. I fear that it will take me over a year to be qualified.
I come from a farming back ground and am very interested in learning the butchering trade. I would like to learn how to break down whole animals. I'm just wondering have you any advice regarding apprenticeships or schools in the Boston where I can learn this or do you think its a dying trade and I should try a different career. Meat cutters have told me Wholefoods is the best money and benefits or Stop and Shop because its union. But I heard Stop and Shop are going prepackaged.
Any advice or response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
